Today, carnival is celebrated in many parts of the world. Revelers from Cuba, Brazil, Jamaica and Barbados join in with those who celebrate their own carnival in the United States, the Mardi Gras festival. In Haiti, the event kicks off in January, with a pre-carnival set of activities that run into the the formal celebration, which take place over three days to end on the Tuesday before Lent begins.
