The tradition of carnival began many hundreds of years ago as a costumed festival put on by the members of the catholic church. This is the reason why the festivities take place right before the Lenten period. Even its name comes from the fact, seeing as the season of Lent is a time when no meat is eaten, and the name carnival means to put away meat.
