The music of Joe Jack

Joe Jacques, a teacher, a musician, a singer, a lyricist, an accordionist and also a keyboard player was born in Gonaives on 25th may, 1936. We know very little about his childhood or early days of struggle all we know about him is that he was a blind at birth and he has never seen sunshine entire his life.

It is said that St-Vincent was the first institution that he joined in Port-Au-Prince for studies. When Joe was at the nineteenth year of his age, he took admission in Perkins School Boston, Massachusetts. Perkins was a special school for blinds; Joe Jacques studied there for four years and then came back to his loved land Haiti where he served as an English teacher for 11 years.

Joe Jacques's life story is full of struggle and hard work. He was the hero of yesteryear and an Idol for his generation. His music sense was very subtle and calm, no orchestral fanfare or climactic crescendo, it has that pure soul that takes the listener to a state of silence and innocence. His music was as rich as his personality.
Sometimes his struggle and anger apparent in his music which takes you back to the days of humiliation and helplessness that prevail strongly in Haitian style of music.
