The President has displayed a special interest in the event unlike his predecessors. The focus of the event is primarily on the historic city itself. 'Gonaives' is a city in the western Haiti, was originally an Indian village called Gonaibo, now a commercial centre, a port and natural harbor on the fertile Artibonite Plain where the French captured Haitian national revolutionary hero François Dominique Toussaint Louverture in 1802.

The city again came to the limelight within a short period in 1804 when Jean-Jacques Dessalines announced Haiti's independence from France at the town's Place d'Armes on January 1, 1804. The most notable landmark of the city is the Musée du Centenaire, inaugurated in 1904 to commemorate country's first century of independence.

The music of Joe Jack

Joe Jacques, a teacher, a musician, a singer, a lyricist, an accordionist and also a keyboard player was born in Gonaives on 25th may, 1936. We know very little about his childhood or early days of struggle all we know about him is that he was a blind at birth and he has never seen sunshine entire his life.

It is said that St-Vincent was the first institution that he joined in Port-Au-Prince for studies. When Joe was at the nineteenth year of his age, he took admission in Perkins School Boston, Massachusetts. Perkins was a special school for blinds; Joe Jacques studied there for four years and then came back to his loved land Haiti where he served as an English teacher for 11 years.

Gazman Pierre (Couleur) of Disip honored by Miami County Commissioner Jean Monestime

Gazman Pierre, also known as Gasman Pierre, was a Haitian artist. He was born on 22nd August in Gonaives. Interestingly, Gazman loved football and had a vision of being a football player but his dream changed when he got a knee injury. This made him to turn to music which was his second vision.

His family moved to United State in 1980. Despite his mother being against music as a career, Gazman began singing as a solo singer. In 1992 he joined a group known as Yeah Bah and launched an album by the name of An nou fe'l a de". He then joined Zenglen Plus and changed its name to D'Zine. D'Zine recorded many songs like Haiti, Lavi en exile and Deal With It. D'Zine had some conflict and Gazman Pierre decided to leave.

The Music of Emeline Michel

The talented Emeline Michel is the reigning queen of Haitian song, a captivating performer, versatile vocalist, accomplished dancer, songwriter and producer. Emeline Michel is beloved by Haitians for combining traditional rhythms with social, political and inspirational content.

Born in Gonaives, Haiti, her first experience in music was singing gospel music at the local church. After completing her education, Emeline Michel accepted an opportunity to study at the Detroit Jazz Center and returned to Haiti as a professional musician. She has recorded and appeared on concert stages throughout the Caribbean, Europe, North & South America, and Africa for the past 15 years, singing both in French and Haitian Creole.
