This genre of music was developed by a Haitian jazz artist, a saxophonist, author, and musical innovator named Nemours Jean-Baptiste (1918-- 1985) who was inspired by the musical styling of Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Although this genre of music has roots in Africa, it has a clear shift towards a new direction. The creator, Nemours Jean-Baptiste, with his band Conjunto International, gave a new impetus to Haitian music. Today Compas is not only the trademark of Haitian music; it is the basis for all the new musical genres in most of the Caribbean countries, and even to some African countries as well.
