The name Malavoi originated from a kind of sugarcane and a name of a street in a Senegalese island called Goree. Most of the members have also been a part of a band coming from the Lycee Schoelcher. They also studied music at Colette Franz.

Jean-Paul Soime is the band's current leader but before him it was former member Jose Privat, who replaced the original leader Paulo Rosine after the latter died in 1993.
All throughout the band's career, their music has drawn inspiration from French Antillean music, with a touch of Caribbean and Brazilian music and jazz. The songs "Albe" and "En le mon la" were among the band's first popular singles.

A year after their formation, the band released their first-ever album titled Malavoi. It was Ralph Tamar who led back then. However, their career that time was short-lived, as the band stopped performing after the first album. It was in 1981 that Paulo Rosine brought the group back together.
Since then, Malavoi had continued touring. They made their way to the United States, Canada, France, Russia, Japan, Ecuador and Brazil. Thanks to their 1983 album Zouel, they managed to gain international fame. Not only that, they bagged the Caribbean music prize the Maracas d'Or.
