Most of us will never know the sacrifices that Roger "Shoubou" Eugene, has made in order to make us "baissez bas" nan "ryel" la. How do you give the fans what they paid for, night after night?

Shoubou and his band Tabou Combo de Petionville has established a blueprint for Konpa music that is recognized and copied throughout the world. Tabou Combo set the standard by which all bands that followed are measured. The band went places and reached plateaus that no other Haitian bands have come close to achieving. They broke through the barriers, as well as the borders of Haiti to attain international success, and, amazingly, maintained that success for many decades.

Bandi Legal Sweet Micky

Michel Martelly, better known as "Sweet Micky", was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on February 12, 1962. He grew up in the Port-Au-Prince suburb of Carrefour with his brother and four sisters. Micky, Best known for/as: Compas music's most colorful superstar, credits veteran Compas bands, Skah Shah, Frere Dejean, Tabou Combo and Cesaria Evora, a singer from the Cape Verde Islands as being influential on his music.

Micky first began performing as a one man band in 1988 in the Casinoes in Haiti. He released his first hit "Ou La La" in 1988. Two years later Micky expanded the band to include a bass player and a percussionist and by the release of the album "I Don't Care" in 1994 Sweet Micky was a household name in Haitian communities at home and abroad.

The zouk music style

Zouk is a style of rhythmic music originating from the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. It has its roots in compas music from Haiti, cadence music from Dominica, as popularised by Grammacks and Exile One. Zouk means "party" or "festival" in the local creole of French with English and African influences, all three of which contribute the sound. In Africa, it is popular in franco/luso countries, while on the African islands of Cape Verde they have developed their own type of zouk. In Europe it is particularly popular in France, and in North America the Canadian province of Quebec.

Kompa, A Haiti Music Genre and Dance

Kompa is a genre of music and a dance whose origin is from Haiti. It is usually written differently; compa or Konpa. The music has beats with tempo that is often rated as medium to fast. This kind of music genre is complex as it changes from time to time. It first came to be from a blending of European ballroom dancing and the Haiti culture.

This specific music genre arose in the early 20th century as a result of other genres like salsa and calypso among many others. The style referred to as Kompa direct was invented by a group of famous artists, however with its increasing fame it changed to the Zouk. Unfortunately the group split up and one of them improvised the above mentioned style once again. The two genres can be confused; however the Zouk has a slower tempo than the latter.

Cafe Griye by Eline Fleury - The Haitian Music Video

Who is Eline Fleury? Marie Eline Fleury was born and orphan in Port-Au-Prince on January 28th. She made her traditional studies in Haiti at College Fernand and the C.E.C. She spent four years studying Economics with the IHECE. Eline went on to work as a professional radio host for "Radio Soleil" and "Radio IBO." She stimulated her audience on a daily basis. In July 2004 Eline founded "ELINE ENTERPRISE," a company of musical animation and spectacle production, with Lebel Junior Jean Baptiste, Chief Operating Officer. Since Eline was a little girl, she took pleasure in singing. She said to herself that becoming a singer is what she really want. Eline performed with several groups and sang in the church. She later decided that she would no longer perform with the groups and decided to go solo. Then she started to make piano bar. Towards the end of the year 2004 and the beginning of the year 2005, Eline released first single, "Mete m Nan Agenda W." A couple of years later in January 2007, she would go on to relase her second single, "Kafe Griye."

RAM was formally created in 1990 by Richard A. Morse, his wife Lunise, and a group of folkloric musicians and dancers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Richard would become the songwriter and lead male vocalist. Lunise became the lead female vocalist. The other band members were all recruited from Port-au-Prince, including some of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. The name of band, RAM, comes from Morse's initials Richard A. Morse.

Morse was born in Puerto Rico, but grew up in the town of Woodbridge, Connecticut in the United States. His father, Richard M. Morse, was an American academic sociologist and author, and his mother was a famous Haitian singer, Emerante de Pradine. Morse and the band began experimenting with the new sounds of rasin music. One of the most important musical movements that swept Haiti in the years following the exile of dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, mizik rasin, or simply rasin, combines elements of traditional Vodou ceremonical and folkloric music with rock and roll.
