What is Commitment?
In simple term "commitment" may be defined as the act of binding yourself (intellectually or emotionally) to a course of action. When you make a commitment, you dedicate yourself to something, like a person or a cause. It evokes a strong sense of intention and focus. Strictly speaking, "commitment" is a promised action without any excuse or any debate or lengthy analysis. If we put our head underwater and keep it there for a while, we will soon realize that we are 100% committed to breathing. There are three common types of commitments that bind an employee to an organization: (1) Affective Commitment (Affection for his job); (2) Continuance Commitment (Fear of loss of job); and (3) Normative Commitment (Sense of obligation to stay). In a way, these three categories of commitments exist in our personal lives as well. In a society, when a responsible person makes a commitment, he tries hard to fulfill the promise, because of his affection on belonging to the society (or affective Commitment). If he cannot fulfill that, his acceptance or importance in his surrounding society might get lost (continuance commitment) and for a social being, it is always a responsibility and an obligation to fulfill a commitment (normative commitment).
