As per United Nations Development Program 2014 estimate, the national poverty rate in Haiti is 58.6%. Out of that 24.7% people (that is 1/4th of the population) live in abject poverty (absolute worst, most hopeless level of poverty). The 'poverty line' is calculated by determining the total cost of all the essential items that an average human adult consumes in one year. In October 2015, the World Bank updated international poverty line to US$1.90 a day. Hunger and food insecurity are chronic issues in Haiti. The richest (1% of the population) hold the combined wealth of the 45% of the population.
