Today Carnival is celebrated throughout the Caribbean region for most of the year.

At the onset of the 18th century, a population of freed Trinidadian slaves coalesced with French, Spanish, and British colonists, giving the celebration of Carnival a multi-cultural flavor. When slavery was abolished in 1834, its beneficiaries were free to express their once-repressed cultural traditions. The liberation of their spirits found outward expression in native costumes, music, and provocative dance moves.
