Emeline Michel Records Healing Songs for Haiti

Emeline Michel, Haiti's First Lady of Song, has recently issued long-awaited album, Quintessence: The Healing Songs of Haiti. Originally envisioned as a collection of romantic love songs, Emeline was nearly done recording it when Haiti was shaken by the 2010 earthquake. The event forced her to reconsider the message of the album.

She first contacted Edwidge Danticat, much-honored for her writings on Haitian family-culture myth and lore. She sent her lyrics to Emeline, who was moved to tears over Edwidge's ability to convey deeply soulful yearnings of a people beaten down, but whose spirits point heavenward nonetheless.

Folk Jazz Artist Beethova Obas

Musician Beethova Obas was born in Haiti in 1964, son of Haitian artist, Charles Obas. The youngest sibling in his family, he grew up under the terror regime of François Duvalier and his death squad, Ton Ton Macoutes. The death squad threatened citizens, who dared criticize Duvalier policies. Often mysterious disappearances occurred, in which a member of the community was never seen again. Beethova's father was such a victim, last seen protesting near Port-au-Prince's presidential house.

Beethova continued his father's legacy as a musician and social activist. He became a self-taught musician, learning the craft on his father's instruments. Immersing himself in Haitian music, he also developed an ardent interest in jazz.

Born in Gonaives, Haiti, her first experience in music was singing gospel music at the local church. After completing her education, Emeline accepted an opportunity to study at the Detroit Jazz Center and returned to Haiti as a professional musician. She has recorded and appeared on concert stages throughout the Caribbean, Europe, North & South America, and Africa for the past 15 years, singing both in French and Haitian Creole.
