One of the largest Mardi Gras carnivals in North America and the entire Caribbean. As a national celebration, it is put on by the government and business people, and starts with a pre-celebration phase in January. The main celebration happens in February and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is when Mardi Gras begins. It is to be noted that the carnival period, a time of much socially-accepted debauchery, ends just as the Lenten period begins, when the principles of penance and fasting create a much more somber attitude among the masses.
