In Haiti, the first official celebration of Carnival happened in Port-au-Prince, during the year when the country was declared independent in 1804. Madri Gras is a way to indulge with food, drink and fun before the beginning of 40-day fasting for the Catholic holiday Lent. The three day celebration during Mardi Gras is a big holiday time in Haiti when all the schools and businesses remain closed.

In the earlier times, Kanaval celebrations were criticized for disregarding indecent lyrics, dancing, music, mocking the government. May be that could be the reason why Kanaval is gradually becoming a more government run celebration with funding from the government, wealthy Haitian families and businessmen.
