Carnival in Haiti, known by the Kreyol equivalent Kanaval, is a yearly festival that occurs just before Mardi Gras. Taking place over several weeks filled with lively Haitian music, colorful costumes and much revelry, the Haitian Defile Kanaval is held in the country's largest city, its capital Port-au-Prince, but is linked throughout the island to other, smaller affairs that take place in locations like Aux Cayes and Jacmel. Branches from this traditional carnival season, including Rara which takes place during the season of Lent, are held during other parts of the year, but none possess the same kind of fervor as the official Carnival season.
