The return of the Haitian Carnival to Port-au-Prince for 2015 was a joyous event for many, as it had been 3 years since the money-making event had taken place in the capital. For the last few years, President Michel Martelly has mandated that it take place instead in Cayes, Cap-Haitien and Gonaives as a way of boosting the economy of these cities, and because of the disaster zone that was the capital city following the devastating 2010 earthquake. The return to Port-au-Prince was, consequently, bittersweet.
