Historians conclude from their research of historical records that Tobago and Trinidad initiated the Carnival now celebrated throughout the Caribbean towards the end of the 18th century. This came about when an influx of French and Spanish colonists began practicing the tradition of Masquerade Ball. But Fat Tuesday festivals pre-dated them by 50 years or longer.
